Early yesterday morning when I was hiking with Pip on one of my favorite trails—it runs along the Tesuque Creek, overflowing its banks after last week’s snow, I passed four other hikers. And two dogs. The hikers were all women.
There are plenty of men who hike our beautiful Santa Fe National Forest. They may even be a majority. But we women are the mainstays. We are always there, early in the morning, no matter the weather.
The first women carried a big backpack with a small black iron skillet swinging from a hook, just the right size to fry a single egg over a camp stove (no fires allowed) on a cold early-winter morning.
That skillet symbolizes our empowerment. We plan, we get ready, and we go. Nobody hold us back. Our own fears don’t hold us back.
Now, with the election upon us, it’s important for us to remember that, no matter who is elected, WOMEN RULE. We seldom sit in the highest places or hold the highest offices, but our influence is crucial as voters, citizens, friends. We can’t let any form of defeat discourage us.
Always remember the little black iron skillet and the girls who are watching us and will continue our dreams.
