It may seem strange that in the midst of the problems with Hopscotch and the Kentucky Foundation for Women, I’m choosing to write about the Bobwhite Quail. There are two reasons: as my lawyers and I prepare to offer the conditions for a settlement KFW has asked for to avoid a suit, the details must be kept secret. Tomorrow our letter goes out to their lawyer and then we wait a week for a response. At that point I hope I can give all you, my wonderful supporters, more detail about what is happening.
The other reason is that the Bobwhite Quail has showed up for the first time on Wolf Pen Mill Farm, the blessed setting for Hopscotch.
This plump little bird shows some of the characteristics of all of us who have stayed at Hopscotch over the years. She is distinctively marked, reminding me of the beautiful flowing garments we wore for dances and celebrations; she has a short sharp whistle, like our words that can’t be ignored, and she is great at finding what she wants to eat as we used to do in the big kitchen at Hopscotch. She is native to the place, as we are, and she is a survivor.
I hope we can all take courage from the example of this little bird. I think we are going to need it.

Beautiful Sallie. Thank you for sharing.
Good luck with the Hopscotch outcome. We will all be anxious to hear.
